Nominee Viewing Challenge (34/53)
At this point, I've seen just about every feature-length film I am sure I'll be able to see prior to the Oscars. There are a few that are still up in the air (namely No and The Gatekeepers, which aren't set to open theatrically until the first or second week in February, and which might not come to my area (which isn't New York or Los Angeles) prior to the ceremony. Tonight my wife and I went to see Life of Pi, which has 12 nominations, and thus resulted in a lot of categories getting closed out. When we see Les Misérables, most of the remaining categories will follow. The Master DVD release date is holding three performance categories hostage (Actor, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress), but I hope to be able to find the DVD somewhere the …
Nominee Viewing Challenge (28/53)
I broke the halfway point last night, and feel that this year (with the exception of just a few films I'm not sure where or how I'm going to see them) I should be in great shape for reaching nominee viewing completing well before the Oscars themselves. Of the 122 total nominations, I've seen the film for 78 of them, meaning that while I'm only just over half way to total film completion, I'm almost 2/3 of the way to total nomination completion. I watched another 4 films since the last update, and closed out another category. I've got a 3-day weekend coming up, and will be celebrating my birthday with a day of movies at the theater with my wife, so I should have a fairly significant update in a few days. Until then, here are the updates fro…

Since my last update, I've seen 4 feature films (all Best Picture nominees) and 1 short film (that I actually found while searching for video for its article on this wiki—Fresh Guacamole). I closed out my second awards category in the process (Best Original Screenplay) and am just one film away from closing out a few more. Added to my previous list (found here) are the following 5 films and their respective number of nominations.
- Amour (5)
- Beasts of the Southern Wild (4)
- Fresh Guacamole (1)
- Silver Linings Playbook (8)
- Zero Dark Thirty (5)
- Best Animated Feature
- Best Original Screenplay
Check back in a few days for a further update!

Nominee Viewing Challenge (18/53)
Each year, I attempt to watch every film nominated for an Oscar in each category. Generally, this means I have between 45 and 55 films to watch in a given year, depending on how many films receive many nominations. Last year I saw, prior to the Oscars, 58 of the 63 nominees (the remaining 5 of which I have seen since). This year, the task before me is a little more manageable, with only 53 films in total to see.
Since we've now had almost 2 days since the nominees were announced, I thought I'd make my initial post, and the 18 films I'm starting the run having already seen (including a few I watching in the last 2 days). I have one category out of 24 completely viewed (Animated Feature), and am well on my way to having a few more all wrapped…

The 85th Academy Awards Host Is
Cool news, fans! It was just announced that Seth MacFarlane will be the host for the 85th Academy Awards, and this will be MacFarlane's first appearance on Oscar's stage.
"Seth is unbelievably talented," said Academy President Hawk Koch. "We couldn't be happier with the creative team we've assembled. With Craig, Neil, and now Seth, we're off to a great start."
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. Don Mischer will direct the telecast for the third consecutive time. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide!

Oscar Challenge: 11/62
Six full days since the Oscar nominations were announced and I'm 11 movies in. Prior to the nominations I'd seen the following films which made the cut:
- Midnight in Paris
- Woody Allen is my all-time favorite director, so there's no way I'd miss one from him. This was Allen in top form, as he hasn't been for fifteen or so years. The fanciful, intellectual tone of this script is exactly what he's best at, and hearkens back to some of his best work, like Annie Hall, The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Stardust Memories. I don't think it will win, in part because Allen is so anti-Oscars, but seeing it recognized is very nice, as I can think of few films I enjoyed and respected more than this one in 2011.
- Hugo
- Scorsese captured all the magic of early cinema …
My Annual Oscar Challenge
With the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards in just around 36 hours, I'm gearing up for my annual Oscar watching tradition. Since 2004, I've tried each year to see every Oscar-nominated film prior to the awards ceremony. This generally consists of anywhere between 50 and 60 films, and occupies a good amount of my free time in late January and February.
Some years, the task has proven impossible, as short documentaries, feature documentaries, and foreign language films are sometimes simply not available in the US without actually being a member of the Academy or living in the right city where they're screening at special events. I lucked out for most of those years by living in New York City, where the museums and independent theaters d…
Oscars Campaign Trailer
It's officially Oscar campaign season and the hunt for Billy Crystal commences!
Making light of the fact that Eddie Murphy bowed out of his host duty, this new, playful trailer pokes fun at the Oscars dilemma by searching for the legendary host: Billy Crystal.
Featuring Robin Williams, Josh Duhamel, Megan Fox, William Fichtner and Vinnie Jones, the actors go "Off the Grid" to find the host. The trailer is a marked departure from more serious-toned Oscar campaigns in the past, and the Academy continues to reflect the needs of its younger audience by teaming up with Funny or Die.
The trailer will run in more than 20,000 theaters starting today, but you can also view it here!
